My site.

My rules page of my website. Keeping to a colour theme and overall theme with this.

Just some initial ideas I have. Threw some paint, paper and type together. Not sure where I am going with this yet… Will make up my mind when my mind is in a better place.

I took this.
I’m really not much of a photographer, but I like this. I took my camera out the other day to test it’s boundaries. Some photo’s came out awful but some lovely, I now know what my camera is best at. I like the film I get, it’s from a shop in Manchester, and the film is out of date, so when they get developed the photo’s have a really nice look to them, like the colour is a little off, and it helps make the photo’s look older.
Today I handed in my essay, BIG relief. Now I just need to crack on with this poster brief. It doesn’t stop!

Mono-printing
This is another printing technique I tried while in the print room, I think it’s one of the easiest techniques, but one of the nicest too. I really like the way the lines aren’t neat and how the ink picked up things I didn’t really want it too, but it looks great. I tried some simpler ones, but this is my favourite, I like the detail in it. I would like to use this technique again… and again.

Letter-pressing
Last Thursday while people were still in Amsterdam, I went (with a few friends) into the print room, I didn’t really have any techniques in mind that I wanted to try… But when I got there, I decided to try some letter-pressing. Never done it before. I was so easy, I was really surprised. I really like the texture and neatness that you can get from it, I did a few to try and this one is when the letters had less ink on them. I really like where the ink hasn’t picked up aswel, it looks distorted.

The reason I wanted to do this, was because during this “inter semester break” I went back home and my six year old sister asked me if I could help her make a potato stamp for her homework. She said she asked me because she knows I like art, bless her. Anyway I helped her cut out a love heart shape (she thinks they’re pretty) and we made the stamp using some paint I had left at home for my art box. It was so much fun, and I hadn’t really thought about using it for type before, until today when I remembered about it.

But cutting a love heart out was easy, trying to cut a ‘G’ out wasn’t so easy. I remembered half way through cutting one that it would be the wrong way round when I come to stamping it on paper, so I started again, I think I did fair well.  I then used some Acrylic paint to stamp it on paper and it’s come out really well… The paint is still wet so I’ll scan it in later.

I’ve now added the prints that I made using the potato. I really like the outcome. I think it’s personal, and it was really fun to make. I chose my favorite two. The reason I like them is because ones so bold and the other you can barely see, I think it’s interesting how they look next to each other.

This is my front cover… At first the type was just white, but after looking back and my research I found that adding a bit of colour really helps to make a publication stand out and look more interesting. I chose pink because it is the colour of Salford’s council, and this is a publication for them. I have also added this colour in bits throughout my publication, and I personally think it makes a lot of difference.

I did the same thing as I did with the type, I turned the colour of the illustration to white and put it over the cropped image of the background that I created. I think it looks really good and stands out. I printed it out to see if it looked just as good and I think it does. Then I decided to try it on a different coloured and textured paper, I had some spares lying around and thought it’s worth a try. So I printed it out onto green textured paper, and I really like the outcome. But i’m not sure if it stands out as much as the white plain paper… advice anyone? cheers.

I have also looked at type that I like, and I wanted to also do these hand-rendered, I don’t know if it’ll look right when I come to putting it all together, but for now I really like it. I think it looks personal and that’s what I am going for.

I have looked at a few different typefaces and I made stencils of them all, I then used paint and a sponge and went over them… I liked this one because I mixed a San Serif and a Serif to get the Old to New feel, I like it as it is subtle and I didn’t want it to be over the top.

I then scanned it in and changed the black type to white and put it over the cropped image of the background I created, I really like it, I think it stands out and I love the different textures. I’m proud of this so far.
